Editing

Invest in your work. Invest in your career. Invest in an editor.

Whether you’re trying to catch the attention of an agent or entice people to buy your ebook, style matters. A little editing can polish a good piece into a great one, ready for publishing. A lot of editing can help you take a first draft and turn it into the novel you’ve been dreaming of.

You want to tell your story in the clearest, most compelling way possible. You want it to get in the hands of as many people as possible. You want to come across as a professional, an expert, a “real writer.” (As a fellow author, I know the feeling.)

But you don’t necessarily want to spend weeks or months chasing after typos and trying to see your work in a new light. That’s not why you became a writer. So you need a little professional help to ensure your writing as strong as it can be, so you can get back to the fun part of this author-ing business: Telling stories.

Professional editing services from a fellow author can help you with that!

What you’ll get from my editing services:

  • The peace of mind that comes with knowing you’ve done everything you can to help your beloved work succeed in the competitive publishing marketplace
  • Time and energy you would have spent ending that can now be used on the next project (or on selling your books!)
  • No more frustrating editing ruts, woe over killing your darlings, or that Sisyphean feeling that no matter how many rounds of editing, there will still be mistakes you just can’t see
  • The benefit of not only a fresh perspective on your work, but one that’s borne of years of practice, experience and study
  • Better reviews, higher ratings, and more word of mouth buzz, meaning better sales for all your projects
  • Guidance on how not to make the same mistakes again, helping you improve not just an individual work, but your overall craft

You’ve seen successful authors and publishing experts explain over and over again why you need a professional editor, as an indie author or as a querent of a traditional publishing house. But you also need one who will preserve your voice while being blunt and honest about the things you can do to improve your writing.

I offer different levels of editing for all genres of fiction and many nonfiction topics. Unlike some editors, I’m happy (and qualified) to edit young adult and erotica. My favorite genres to edit include thriller, horror, erotica, paranormal anything, fantasy, science fiction, YA and anything with GLBTQ themes.

In all of my editing, the goal is never to strip away your voice, but merely to make it the clearest and most compelling it can be. I think editing should be about more than applying technical rules; it should be about knowing the best way to get a message across to your audience. I hold each work I edit to the highest possible standards: not mere technical perfection, but the absolutely strongest way to tell your story.

I’m not mean, but I mean business. Let me help you get your story noticed.

COMPLETE EDITING PACKAGE
Flat rate for big savings!

$2800

Piecing together editing services, especially if you do so from several different editors, can let things fall through the cracks. With the complete editing package, I will guide your editing process from the very beginning, offering support and guidance the whole way. The package includes three separate readings of your piece: one for substantive edits, one for content edits and one for line editing. You’ll have a chance to make changes in between each stage, and you can add extra readings for a discounted rate. As a bonus, I add in two hours of writing or publishing coaching for free. The flat package rate of $2800 regardless of word count means huge savings for you.

Take care of all your editing needs with one click by scheduling your complete package today!

LINE EDITING

$8 per 1000 words

This includes editing for grammar, punctuation, spelling, word choice and clarity. Substantive edits typically take 4-6 weeks, depending on word count.

This service is best for manuscripts that have seen at least one substantial edit and need only a tidying up. This kind of edit won’t substantially alter the quality of your writing, but it will provide that last polish necessary to produce a professional, publishable manuscript.

COPY/CONTENT EDITING

$12 per 1000 words

This includes everything in the line editing service, plus deeper stylistic concerns. For example, passive voice, run-on sentences, awkward phrasing, flow, rhythm, clichés, purple prose, melodrama, overdone symbolism, continuity, realistic dialogue, POV slips, etc. Content edits typically take 4-6 weeks, depending on word count.

This service is best for those with some writing experience or those who have worked out all the kinks in their storytelling/style, but need a first- or second-draft edit.

SUBSTANTIVE/DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING

$20 per 1000 words

This package combines a developmental editing report (see below) with content editing for a complete, in-depth edit. This kind of editing focuses on structure, plot, characterization, continuity, voice and pace, in addition to grammar, syntax and spelling. Substantive edits typically take 6-8 weeks, depending on word count. I highly suggest ordering a line edit after your substantive edit, or a content edit if significant changes have been made.

This service is best for those who have a completed first draft and would like to get their manuscript ready for submission to a publisher or for publication as an ebook.

DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING REPORT

To create this report, I will read the complete manuscript and take extensive notes on character development, plot arcs, story structure, pace, voice, continuity, dialogue, genre conventions and similar factors, in addition to deeper stylistic concerns like descriptions, scene choices and “show, don’t tell.” For non-fiction, this report focuses on argument strength, organization, overall clarity, weak points, additional areas of research, overly technical descriptions, unclear arguments, etc. This in-depth report will then address any concerns and provide advice on possible solutions.

This is included in any developmental editing order, and is also available separately for a $750 flat fee. I only offer this service on completed manuscripts, but short works are accepted.

FIRST 10 PAGES

$35

If you’d just like a quick edit of those all-important first 10 pages, as a last step before you put together a publication package, I offer this service at a low flat rate of $35. You can also order this service if you’d like a more extensive editing sample than the free one I offer, before ordering a full edit.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
  • What will happen once I submit the order form?
I will first look over your request and answer any questions you may have. Then, we’ll work together to determine the best place on my editing schedule for you. Once you have paid the deposit to save your spot, you will get a short welcoming packet with some questions for you to fill out for me. Once your spot on the schedule comes up, I will begin work on your manuscript. When it’s finished, you will receive the edited document along with comments. You can message me any time after that if you have any questions about my edits.
  • How do payments work?
You will pay half the total cost of your project up front, in order to claim your spot on the schedule. The second half will be due at the end of the process, before edits are returned. I accept payments through Paypal, SquareCash, or Google Wallet. That way, if anything should happen in the payment process, you can rest assured that there’s is an independent third party to help moderate disputes.
  • I want to pay for everything up front. Do you offer discounts for that?
Yes! Full payment at the beginning of the process is greatly preferred, in fact. I’ll take 10% off the total cost if you’d like to pay upfront.
  • How do I format my manuscript?
Use a standard font, 12-point type. Times New Roman, Arial, or Courier is acceptable. Double space the entire text and use 1″ margins on all sides. I accept submissions in Word, Pages and Open Office formats, and will return edits in whichever format you prefer.
  • When will my edit take place?
In order to give every manuscript the attention it deserves, I must stagger projects (usually beginning one every two weeks). Then, depending on the kind of editing you need, it will take between 2-8 weeks to finish the edit. The cleaner the manuscript, the faster your piece will be ready of course! If you have a specific deadline or need a rush order, just mention that in the order form and we’ll see what we can do. The schedule fills up fast, so the sooner you submit the form, the sooner you can get your manuscript back and get it into people’s hands.
